Parents worry about new school policy - Herrin cemetery dig

Dentist appointments, doctors visits, funerals...all things that can make kids miss school. But some New Madrid, Missouri parents worry a new attendance policy means their kids will be punished for missing school even when it is for emergencies. Kadee Brosseau joins us on Heartland News at Six for more about the new policy.

Going to college has just gotten easier for high school seniors who have overcome prescription drug abuse.
Attorney General Jack Conway announced a new scholarship today that's targeted to high school seniors who have been impacted by prescription drug abuse, either as a recovering addict, as the child of an addict or in some other way.

It's time to get ready to shop for health insurance for many Illinois residents. President Barack Obama's health law requires nearly everyone to have insurance starting in 2014, and a new online marketplace is set to open Oct. 1 to make shopping for insurance easier.

Researchers were back out at the Herrin City Cemetery today in hopes of finding the graves of nearly two dozen union miners stabbed to death in 1922. Arnold Wyrick has more on Heartland News at Five and Six.

Five-year-old Alannah Poullard told President Barack Obama she needed an excuse for missing kindergarten while she visited the White House with her father and mother, a veteran of the Afghanistan conflict who was being honored for her service along with a group of other Wounded Warriors. The president obliged, and White House photographer Pete Souza snapped the moment and tweeted the photo, which has gone viral.

    The person of interest in the double-murder and bank robbery in Conway on Monday is in custody. Brandon MIchael Council was arrested in Greenville, North Carolina Wednesday, along with two other people, authorities there confirmed.  Brandon Michael Council was wanted for questioning in connection with the murder of two CresCom bank employees during a bank robbery at the CresCom Bank in Conway on Monday afternoon.
