Pork, beef and chicken will be on the grill this weekend in Murphysboro but bragging rights are on the table.

The 26th annual Praise the Lard Murphysboro Barbeque Cook-off kicks off Thursday outside 17th Street Barbeque.

More than 80 teams from 14 states have signed up and will converge on the Apple City to compete for $25,000 in prize money and Grand Champion bragging rights.

This is a dual-sanctioned event. Judges from both the Memphis Barbeque Network and Kansas City Barbeque Society will review entries of chicken, fish, pork shoulder, ribs, brisket and whole hog.

The weekend begins Thursday night with a fish and wing contest. The fish fry and live music even are open to the public.

On Friday teams will fire up their smokers. Judging takes place Saturday. Throughout the event, live music and events will be open to the public.

More than half of the 17 people killed when a tourist boat sank on a Branson lake were members of the same Indiana family, and they likely wouldn't have been on the ill-fated trip but for a ticket mix-up.
