Reward paid for tip in cold case slaying

CADIZ, Ky. (AP) - A southwestern Kentucky Sheriff has paid out a $1,000 out of his own pocket after receiving a tip that led to an arrest in a previously unsolved slaying.

Trigg County Sheriff Ray Burnam told the Kentucky New Era (http://bit.ly/1852WQh ) the reward stood even if the anonymous tipster chooses not to testify at the trial of 28-year-old Seth C. Hooks of Owensboro.

Hooks is charged with killing 64-year-old Harvey Choat of Cadiz in 2008. The case sat unsolved until Sept. 5, when the tip led police to Hooks, who was in jail in Daviess County on an attempted bank robbery charge.

Police have not released a possible motive in Choat's death. Kentucky State Trooper Jay Thomas says investigators had developed new evidence, but "caught a lucky break" with Hooks' arrest.
