This week's Heartland Cook Judy Jo Phillips shares an old family apple dish in celebration of Murphysboro's annual Apple Festival. Judy Jo's baked apples don't just add a pop of color to your dinner table, they also add a cinnamon zing your plate that your taste buds won't soon forget! The recipe has been handed down for generations in Judy Jo's family and it remains a sentimental and flavor favorite.

Ingredients:

  • 4 Golden Delicious apples (peeled & cored)
  • 1 1/2 cup sugar
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 cups water
  • 4 drops Cinnamon Oil
  • 6-8 drops red food coloring

Directions:

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

Peel, half and core four apples and place in a 9 x 13 baking dish.

In a sauce pan, bring water, sugar and salt to a boil and remove from heat. Add cinnamon oil and red food coloring. Mix well and pour over apple halves.

Place dish in oven, uncovered. Bake for 1 hour. Baste apples every 15 minutes while baking to ensure cinnamon broth soaks in completely.

Judy Jo's tip: Baking the apples for 1 hour will give you a very soft apple relish. If you prefer a "crisp-crunch" to your apple - reduce cooking time to 45 minutes.
