CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - A Scott City man died in a crash on Interstate 55 early Friday morning.
The coroner says the victim is 25-year-old Justin Schmidt of Scott City. He had previously lived in Mississippi.
It happened in the southbound lanes at the Cape Girardeau/Scott City line just before 1:30 a.m. at the 90 mile marker. Five vehicles were involved.
According to Cape Girardeau police, a green Chevrolet Monte Carlo and a White Jeep Liberty collided in the right lane. The Jeep pulled to the right hand side of the road and stopped. The Monte Carlo spun into the barrier cables and came to rest facing north.
Schmidt, the driver of the vehicle, appears to have gotten out of the vehicle and was struck by a Hyundai Santa Fe that then struck the Monte Carlo, according to police. The Hyundai flipped onto its top and slid to the right side of the roadway. Two other vehicles that were traveling south also struck the Monte Carlo.
Schmidt was declared dead by Scott County Coroner Scott Amick.
The only other injury reported was a female driver of the Hyundai who suffered cuts to her hands.
The crash caused the interstate to be shut down for approximately two hours.
Departments from Cape Girardeau, Cape Girardeau County, Scott City and Scott County responded to the scene.
