CHAFFEE, MO (KFVS) - Four-year-old Dane McMullin slipped into a pool earlier this summer and nearly lost his life. Dane's mother, Krissy, calls 9-year-old Lilly Wessel an "angel."
"He was on the bottom of the pool," Lilly Wessel said."I swam down and grabbed under him. Then, I couldn't get up, so I pulled on the rail and got up."
Lilly pulled Dane from the deep end of the pool to the shallow end. She called for the adults and at that point, he was unconscious.
"I really didn't think he was alive," Krissy McMullin, Dane's mom, said. "They were trying to hold me back from him because I guess they didn't know and that made me think even worse. They couldn't get him to wake up."
Nurses and an EMT happened to be at the same gathering at a friend's backyard pool party. McMullin said they did CPR on little Dane until the ambulance arrived. He spent about 24 hours in the hospital, with his mom by his side.
"I asked him if he was scared, he said he wasn't scared," Krissy McMullin said. "He said he knew I'd come and get him, which broke my heart that I didn't even know he was in there but, thank God, Lilly did."
Lilly's parents are proud of what their daughter did. They say they didn't know the whole story until the day after the incident.
"She goes, 'Well, I went under the water to get him.'" Steve Wessel, Lilly's dad, said. "When she said that, my wife just completely lost it."
Krissy McMullin says she will never forget that day, or what Lilly did to save her son's life.
"I keep thinking about how different things could have turned out, I think about that every day, every time I look at him." McMullin said.
Dane says he still likes to swim and his mom says he is now taking swimming lessons.
