Wappapello man drowns at Sikeston Sports Complex Lake

SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) -

A Wappapello man drowned at the Sikeston Sports Complex Lake Sunday night.

The man's friend told police they went swimming in the lake Sunday and when his friend went under the water, he did not resurface.

Sikeston Department of Public Safety received the call around 8:20 p.m.

Sikeston’s Special Operation’s group began rescue operations with their two boats. Missouri State Highway Patrol (Water Patrol) also responded to the scene to assist.

The body of the 18-year-old Wappapello man was located in the water around 10:35 p.m.

The body was turned over to Ponder Funeral Home.

There is no foul play suspected.

    The City of Cape Girardeau Storm Water crew has closed the 100 block of North Water Street between Broadway and Themis for an emergency storm line repair. Traffic will not be allowed on this portion of North Water Street while work is being done. Work is expected to be done by Thursday, August 17, at 5 p.m. Drivers are asked to use caution near the work zone and seek alternate routes.
