Couple injured after being thrown from motorcycle in Murphysboro

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - A man and woman were injured after a motorcycle crash Friday evening in Murphysboro.

It happened on Ava Road, just west of Illinois Route 127.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, Richard Spurgeon, 59, of Murphysboro failed to negotiate a curve on his motorcycle before it left the road and overturned. Spurgeon and a passenger, Melissa Zamora, 33, of Murphysboro were thrown from the motorcycle. They were not wearing a helmet, according to deputies.

Spurgeon received serious injuries and was taken to an area hospital by EMS before being flown to a St. Louis hospital.

Zamora was taken to an area hospital by personal vehicle.

Deputies say Spurgeon was operating the motorcycle with a revoked Illinois driver's license and had no valid registration or insurance.

The Murphysboro Police Department assisted with the crash.
