MARSHALL COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to again halt traffic on the US 68/KY 80 Eggners Ferry Bridge across Kentucky Lake for about 10 to 15 minutes on Friday or Saturday.
According to KYTC, this halt in traffic is to allow a load test to prepare for construction of a new Eggners Ferry Bridge. This testing is part of a contract for construction of the Lagoon Bridge that is ongoing nex to the existing bridge.
The contractor has placed several hundred tons of weight on top of a piling. An explosive charge will be detonated which will cause the load to bounce. Sensors on the piling will then gather data that will be used to develop design specifications for the foundation of the main bridge piers.
Traffic on the US 68/KY 80 Eggners Ferry Bridge is expected to be halted only about 10 to 15 minutes to allow the explosion to be detonated. The controlled explosion poses no direct hazard to the public. Traffic is being halted on the existing bridge to assure that motorists are not startled by the explosion while driving.
The US 68/KY 80 Eggners Ferry Bridge is at the Marshall/Trigg County Line and serves as the western entrance to Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area.
