NEW MADRID COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The New Madrid County Sheriff's Department and the U.S. Marshalls Service teamed up with local police departments at 7 a.m. on September 4 to conduct compliance checks on all registered sex offenders in the county.
Deputies from the New Madrid County Sheriff's Department and the U.S. Marshalls Service along with Officers from the New Madrid, Morehouse, Portageville, Lilbourn and Marston Police Departments visited the registered address of each registered sex offender.
According to the sheriff's department, the primary goal of the operation was to verify each offender was up to date on their registration and their residence was in compliance with current State and Federal Sex Offender Registry Laws.
According to New Madrid County Sheriff Terry Stevens, there are about 80 registered sex offenders currently living in the county.
During the check, officers identified 21 offenders which may be non-compliant. Follow up investigations will be conducted on these offenders and criminal charges are likely for those confirmed as non-compliant.
Officers say several offenders were not home at the time of the operation. Over the next few days they say they will continue to try and find these offenders, and determine their compliance status.
