Staying safe in the water, heat on Labor Day Weekend

LAKE WAPPAPELLO, MO (KFVS) -

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, it has been a mild summer, so take precautions now that the extreme heat has arrived.

With heat indexes well over 100, you will need to stay cool and drink plenty of water. If you are out on a boat, it can feel even hotter with the sun glaring off the water.

Officials warn if you drink alcohol, be sure to also drink plenty of water. The heat can get to you faster while consuming alcohol.

At Lake Wappapello Saturday, there were thousands of people enjoying the water outside. Troopers say there have not been any reports of any injuries.

The Missouri Highway Patrol wants you to be safe, to use common sense and know the areas of water you frequent.

Be sure to wear a life jacket while out on a boat and keep an eye on your children and each other.
