FREDERICKTOWN, MO (KFVS) - A piece of history is missing from Fredericktown according to city leaders.
City Administrator Greg Stratman said there is a plot of land in town that was one of the first cemeteries in the area.
Renee Sargent Harrison remembers playing hide and seek in the cemetery. She said the graves are from the 1800s, with one of the last ones from the 1880s.
But about 30 years ago, someone removed all the headstones.
Now the City of Fredericktown is starting a steering committee to remember these individuals.
"Buried here are people who played a role in the business community, the mining community, we have some civil war buried here from the battle of Fredericktown, we just felt like they deserved to be recognized," said Stratman.
"Well, I find it unfortunate that this has happened, what we can do now is try to respect the people that are buried here, by making a marker that would show to their descendants where they are laid," said Harrison.
Harrison thinks there might be a lot of people with relatives buried on this land, and they don't even know it.
