CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - This week's Heartland Cook is known by many for her fantastically flavorful Poppy Seed Bread.
Sharon Shaw says whenever she goes to visit her four grandchildren, the first question out of three of their mouths is: "Grandma, did you bring us some poppy seed bread?"
Sharon says she often gives away loaves of the sweet bread for gifts.
Sharon's poppy seed bread keeps very well, and stays moist for days when topped with her special orange-powdered sugar glaze.
- 3 eggs
- 2 1/2 cups sugar
- 1 1/8 cup vegetable oil
- 1 1/2 cup milk
- 1 1/2 teaspoons almond flavoring
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla flavoring
- 1 1/2 butter flavoring
- 3 cups flour
- 1 1/4 teaspoons salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 1/2 tablespoons poppy seeds
- 1/3 cup orange juice
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon almond flavoring
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla flavoring
- 1/2 teaspoon butter flavoring
Mix eggs, sugar, oil, milk, and flavorings together.
Add flour, salt, and baking powder and mix.
Add poppy seeds and mix.
Grease pans and bake at 350 degrees. For 3 medium loaf pans, cook for 52 minutes. For 2 standard loaf pans, cook for 60 minutes.
Cool for 5 minutes in the pan. Run a knife around edges to loosen.
Then add glaze and cool for 5 more minutes and remove from pans.
Let it cool completely and enjoy!
Sharon says the bread also freezes very well so can be saved for later.
