Son accused of killing mother makes court appearance

Neil Howland Neil Howland
SCOTT COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

A man who is facing charges in connection with his mother's murder made his first court appearance on Wednesday.

Neil Howland, 25, of Scott City, heard the charges against him in Scott County. Then a judge set a second court date for September 2013.

Authorities believe Howland killed his mother, Cynthia Canoy, 48, of Scott City.

According to court documents, Howland admits getting mad at his mom, sending his girlfriend and their infant son out to get gas, and then strangling Canoy.

Later that night, Howland reportedly carried his mother's body out to her SUV, put her two small dogs in the vehicle with her, then drove it out to a cornfield and set it on fire.
