Good evening,

For weeks, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has been criss-crossing the state, appearing with school leaders and small business owners, defending his veto of House Bill 253. Today, we caught up with Grow Missouri, a coalition that's defending the bill and saying the legislature should override the governor's veto. Todd Tumminia will have more on their side of the story tonight, on Heartland News at 9 and 10.

Also on Heartland News at 10, we'll bring you more on a random act of violence that left a promising 22-year-old college baseball player dead, a family devastated and two countries half a world apart rattled. A student athlete from Australia was gunned down last week in Duncan, Okla. while he was out jogging. The motive, police say? Three teens who had nothing better to do.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity rates have declined. At the same time, new research shows the obesity rate among adults is on the rise. Kadee Brosseau talked to a personal trainer who said that is not surprising, You can click here to read more about the story.

What to do about a deteriorating school? Back in July, Harrisburg's school board president pitched five when it came to the future of the aging high school. Today, Allison Twaits talked to residents about which option would be right for their community.

Police have arrested the son of a woman who was found dead in her burning vehicle. Neil Howland, 25, of Scott City, has been charged with the class a felony of first degree murder, the class d felony of tampering with evidence, the class d felony of abandonment of a corpse and the class d felony of knowingly burning.

A Poplar Bluff 5th and 6th grade center music teacher recently threw the ceremonial first pitch during a St. Louis Cardinals game at Busch Stadium. You can click here to continue reading.

In national news, the White House announced another furry addition to the Obama family. Meet Sunny – a female Portuguese Water Dog just like the First Dog Bo. In honor of Sunny's adoption, the White House says the Obama family made a donation to the Washington Humane Society.
