Son arrested after mother found dead in burned vehicle

SCOTT COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

Police have arrested the son of a woman who was found dead in her burning vehicle.

Neil Howland, 25, of Scott City, Missouri has been charged with the Class A felony of first degree murder, the Class D felony of tampering with evidence, the Class D felony of abandonment of a corpse, and the Class D felony of knowingly burning.

Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter says Howland was identified early on in the investigation as a person of interest in the murder of his mother, Cynthia Canoy.

Walter says Scott County deputies worked with members of the SEMO Major Case squad, consisting of personnel from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Office, and Sikeston Department of Public Safety.

He says investigators spent hundreds of hours to exhaust leads, conduct interviews, and eliminate other possible suspects.

Sheriff Walter says personnel will continue to investigate other leads in the case.

Howland was take to the Scott County Jail without bond.
