Valier man dead after crash on Rte. 148 near Sesser

SESSER, IL (KFVS) -

A Valier man is dead after a crash on Route 148 north of Sesser Saturday morning.

According to the Jefferson County Coroner Eddie Joe Marks, Ronnie Jay Stroud, Jr. was driving south on Rte. 148 about 3 miles north of Sesser when he lost control and ran off the road, hitting several trees.

Illinois State Police say 23-year-old Stroud was not wearing a seatbelt. They say he was driving a 2001 black Pontiac Grand Prix when the tires when off the right side of the road for an unknown reason. He overcorrected, came back across both lanes of traffic and went off the left side of the road.

Police say the Pontiac hit several trees, overturned and came to a rest down a large embankment. They believe excessive speed contributed to the severity of the crash.

Marks said the crash was found by a state trooper who saw the skid marks while out driving. He said he pronounced Stroud dead at 11:05 a.m., but they're not sure on the time of the crash.

According to ISP, the crash happened between 4 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.

They say the investigation is ongoing and toxicology results are pending.
