Scott City man reportedly threatened stepfather with machete

SCOTT CITY, MO (KFVS) -

A Scott City man is facing a weapon and assault charges after reportedly threatening his stepfather with a machete.

Neil Howland, Jr., 25, faces charges of felony unlawful use of a weapon and misdemeanor assault in the third degree charges, according to Scott County Prosecutor Paul Boyd.

Court papers show the charges stem from a May 19 incident where Howland reportedly threatened to kill his stepfather.

According to the police probable cause statement, Scott City officers responded to a home on Oak Street for a report of stealing. While on scene, officers say Jerry Canoy told them about threats made against him by his stepson, Neil Howland, Jr.

On May 18, officers say after an argument between the Howland and Canoy, Howland displayed a machete and threatened to kill Canoy.

According to the report, Canoy told officers at the time, he and his wife feared for their lives and didn't want to press charges. However, Canoy changed his mind and contacted police on Aug. 1 wishing to go ahead with the charges.

According to the probable cause statement, Howland threatened Conoy and his wife with a gun in the past.
