SIU freshman moving into university dorms

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

The annual freshman move-in day is underway at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.

The effort started at 7 a.m. Friday.

About 3,000 first year students were unloading packed cars and moving into very crowded dorms.

SIU demolished old dorm buildings to make way for new student housing. Until they're completed in 2016, there's a bit of a housing crunch.

Still students say they are excited for a new school year to start.

"Yes I am (excited to be moving in), but kind of nervous too because it's my first time and everything," said Kyla Onojeta, SIU freshman.

Classes begin Monday, August 19.

Southeast Missouri State students start a little later in the month.
