DU QUOIN, IL (KFVS) -

A southern Illinois town is rocked by an explosion killing a well-known Du Quoin man.

The Perry County Coroner's Office identified the man that died as 83-year-old Harold Pundsack

A neighbor says he was true friend who loved to hunt, fish and dance.

Pundsack has a daughter, grandkids and great-grandkids and was looking forward to his 65th high school reunion in October.

His wife, Lola, passed away around eight years ago.

Neighbors say he was often seen smiling and would dance any time he heard music-which is what they say they will miss most.

"He was good to his family he loved them dearly. he was good to the neighborhood; he was an asset to us all. and I think mostly because his cheerful positive attitude, you know, you could be down and he would raise you up," says Loretta Barrett.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to determine the cause of death.

While there hasn't been word of what might have caused the explosion, neighbors have their suspicions.

Several neighbors say they smelled gas while they were taking a walk Saturday night.

They say they didn't think anything of it then - because the neighborhood is located near restaurants and a few gas stations

The explosion was so massive that witnesses miles away reported the explosion.

People have been cleaning off debris from their roofs and yards since the blast.

Authorities say the explosion damaged about ten houses.

As for the cause, emergency managers say the strength of the explosion is making it difficult to pinpoint.

"Until they make a final conclusion, it's going to be hard to sit there and say 'what was the cause and how did it happen?'" says David Searby with the Perry County EMA.

Parts of south lake drive are still closed off because of the investigation and all of the families have been able to return home.

The Du Quoin police are asking that the public be cautious around this area.
