Scott County using ankle bracelets to help with overcrowding

SCOTT COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter says this is an issue county, state, and federal jails deal with. and change is needed but it can't jeopardize public safety.

Sheriff Walter says they began using ankle bracelets in Scott County. The jail now like many across the Heartland is always tight on space.

Sheriff Walter says bracelets for non violent offenders ease over crowding and save money. He says the department has only used this resource with a judge's approval that the person is not dangerous.

"That's saving us a lot of money and giving us more room in the jail," Sheriff Walter said. "I think it's a good thing and we are doing it on a very small scale."

Sheriff Walter says on the high end the bracelets cost about $15 a day and  $35 a day to house an prisoner in jail.
