Fire damages Ste. Gen. city building, truck

STE. GENEVIEVE, MO (KFVS) -

A city building and truck caught fire in Ste. Genevieve late Thursday night.

According to Ste. Genevieve Fire Chief Mick Schwent, a truck inside the garage of the city's maintenance department building caught fire, and spread to the building around 10:40 p.m. Thursday night.

Schwent says the fire started in the engine department of a city department pickup truck.  The fire destroyed most of the components inside and around the engine.

The fire then spread and caught a paper barrel and work bench on fire, before spreading to the ceiling of the building and causing extensive damage to the back of the building.

Schwent says fire crews had some issues getting an overhead door open since the power was out and the pull rope inside was burned off.  They ended up getting it open and extinguished the flames.

At this time, there is no word on how the fire started. It is believed not to be suspicious.
