Food bank makes food bags for kids to eat on the weekends

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Not every kid dreads heading back to school in August. Some look forward to it because they know that means getting to eat breakfast and lunch.

Volunteers with the Southeast Missouri Food Bank spent Friday packing more than 1,000 food bags to send home with kids each weekend.

It's an annual program.  Low-income students are given backpacks full of food each Friday so they have something to take home to eat for the weekend.

"Twenty-one thousand children go to bed hungry on the weekends," said Amanda Winschel with the food bank.  "That is unacceptable. The problem isn't the amount of food, it's getting the food to the children that need it. So that's what the backpack program is all about."

If you'd like to help in anyway, you're encouraged to call the SEMO Food Bank or sign up online at semofoodbank.org.
