Poplar Bluff police warn of possible computer scam

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -

Authorities want you to be on the lookout for a possible scam.

Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs says hackers are getting into people's computers while they are on, activating their webcams, and asking for you to send them money.

Dobbs says the suspects will send a picture they took with a person's webcam and say he/she is in violations and need money sent to them to fix the problem.

Poplar Bluff Police Department Detective Scott Phelps says educating the public is a good way to prevent this problem.

He also said around five people have been hacked so far in this area.

He assumes these hackers are from other countries.

Phelps says to be cautious of any messages that don't seem right and to call your local authority.

He also says to try to stay on common sites and ones that you trust.
