CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Chris Smith has been serving in the U.S. Army for three years. Friday night, he came home to his family. He says he is glad to be back home in the Heartland.

"It's been a long three years for me," Smith said. "I missed everybody, I missed being around family and friends."

Smith's homecoming got even better when he got to sit in his brand new truck for the first time. His family says they are glad to see him home and happy in his new ride.

"Every time I watch the news, I was always looking at the news thinking, 'Okay, I hope my son is okay,'" Randall Smith said.

Now, his son is home to stay. The family says they couldn't be more proud.

"We're just so glad to have him back home and thank him for our service to our country," Mary Smith, Chris' mother, said.

The Smith family says they would like to thank Morlan Chrysler for making the day so special for Chris.

They also say they are thankful to Creative Trim and Performance for putting in a spray-in-liner free of charge.

Randall Smith says it is great to see a community giving back to his son, the soldier, who already gave so much for our country.
