Cardinals drop fourth in a row, 9-2 to Pirates

(KFVS) -

After being swept by the Braves, the Cardinals continued their current struggles on offense, dropping game one of a crucial five-game series in Pittsburgh 9-2 to the Pirates.

With the loss, the Cardinals cling to just a half-game lead over the Pirates in the NL Central.

Francisco Liriano picked up his 11th win after seven innings of one run ball, striking out eight. Jake Westbrook took the loss for the Cards and is now 1-8 in his career against Pittsburgh.

The Pirates struck early scoring four runs in the first inning, the big blow coming from Pedro Alvarez who socked a three-run homer to right field. Matt Carpenter drove in the Cardinals first run with an RBI single in the 6th inning to score Tony Cruz. The Pirates then scored five runs in the 7th to break the game wide open.

This is the Cardinals’ season-high 4-game losing streak. The two teams play a doubleheader Tuesday starting at 3 p.m. CT.
