Lawmakers threaten to override Gov. Nixon's veto

Lawmakers in Missouri's House and Senate are threatening to override Gov. Jay Nixon's veto of House Bill 253 earlier this year.

Republicans in the Missouri legislature say Missourians and businesses need the tax breaks.

Nixon said it would mean cutting Missouri's budget by more than a billion dollars. Nixon talked to us about the possible effects while in New Madrid on Friday.

"We've worked hard," Nixon said. "I've cut taxes four times as governor. We've maintained fiscal discipline. That triple-A rating. The bottom, I think 253 is the way it is written is not the right policy for the state of Missouri today."

The governor already released a list of how much money each district stands to lose if the veto of House Bill 253 is overridden.

For example, Cape schools could miss out on almost $700,000 and Sikeston could miss out on about $1 million.
