School officials at Southeast Missouri State University hope Dempster Hall is ready when the fall semester begins in August.

"Our top priority is getting those classrooms ready for the fall semester," Kathy Mangels with the university said.

According to the Cape Girardeau Fire Department, heavy black smoke and fire was coming from the roof of the building when they arrived.

Firefighters say there was heavy damage to the roof area; water and moderate smoke damage on the second floor and light smoke damage to the first floor.

Dempster Hall remains closed while crews continue to work on the building. Faculty and staff have been let back in the building to get their stuff.

The fire was investigated by the department's investigators and the state fire marshal.

According to Southeast's website, Dempster Hall was completed in 1996 and is a $15.8 million building. It is home to the Donald L. Harrison College of Business.
