PINCKNEYVILLE, IL (KFVS) -

There's a new sports complex coming to Southern Illinois, and city leaders in Pinckneyville hope the complex will grow their community by leaps and bounds.

The city has tapped into an $800,000 grant to get the ball rolling on the facility.

The site for the new complex will be north of Illinois Route 13 and 154 west of town.

"I guess I would see it as bringing tournaments into Pinckneyville," said Alisa Mayo. "And after all the tournaments I've been through with the traveling soccer team, I think it will bring in thousands of families to our community."

The Perry County Soccer League already has a place to play, but it sits right in the pathway of IDOT's proposed truck bypass route. So, instead of letting their soccer league roll away, the league teamed up with local business owners and parents to propose a new complex.

"As much as anything it attracts young families," said Craig Williams President and CEO Community Leak. "Communities with soccer programs historically tend to attract young families at a higher rate, then those communities that don't. Soccer is a growing sport. It's one of America's fastest growing sports. And we've seen a tremendous increase in the interest in soccer in our community over the last eight years."

Pinckneyville's Mayor August Kellerman said that they expect to break ground on the new sports complex in the next couple of months.

This is just phase one of the project. It will begin with five new soccer fields and a football field.\
