PIEDMONT, MO (KFVS) -

The Missouri Department of Conservation continues its efforts to get rid of feral hogs in southeast Missouri.

Pigs were caught in a trap near Clearwater Lake over the weekend.

Conservation agents say they have 8 or 10 traps in the area.

Experts say these feral hogs are a major threat to agriculture and native wildlife like turkeys and deer because they eat a lot of their crucial food sources.

Agents say the hogs are incredibly difficult to catch.

"The feral hogs are extremely intelligent," said Mark McLain with the Missouri Department of Conservation. "They learn very quickly. They do not like human disturbance at all and they shy away from humans. It makes it very difficult to trap them."

Once the hogs are trapped, conservation agents put them down.

If you see feral hogs in your area, you should let the conservation department know right away.
