Woman, 100, dies after fire in suburban Chicago

Posted: Updated:

WILMETTE, Ill. (AP) - Authorities in suburban Chicago say a 100-year-old woman has died after a fire severely damaged her condo building over the weekend.

The Wilmette Fire Department said in a news release that fire crews were called to the blaze at the building early Saturday.

Opal Reifenberg was taken to a local hospital after crews found her in her unit. The Cook County medical examiner's office says she was pronounced dead after 10 p.m. on Saturday. Authorities say she would have turned 101 early next month.

Authorities believe the fire started in Reifenberg's unit. Wilmette police say the fire did not spread to other units but caused about $300,000 in damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Coworkers say Reifenberg still worked at the Wilmette Public Library.
