Quinn signs bills to crack down on waterway safety

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has signed legislation that would crack down on boating under the influence and strengthen boating safety laws.

Quinn signed two bills on Sunday, Senate Bill 1479 and Senate Bill 1310.

Bill 1479 would ensure that anyone operating a motorboat involved in a crash resulting in serious injury or death has to consent to a blood, breath or urine test to determine their blood alcohol content.

Those who refuse testing, test positive for drugs or exceed the legal blood alcohol content would face suspension of their Illinois driver's license.

Bill 1310 strengthens the state's Boat Registration and Safety Act regarding the carrying capacity of boats.

It also redefines "authorized emergency watercraft" and raises penalties on boat rental operators who do not equip their crafts with life jackets, a fire extinguisher or lighting.
