WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

Visitors to the Williamson County Regional Airport got a glimpse of history Saturday as the runway was lined with World War II planes.

People had the chance to tour the cockpits and even take a ride.

However, for the World War II veterans, the experience was more than just looking at neat airplanes. It was a piece of their past.

Johnny Key was a soldier in the army and was a part of the invasion of Normandy.

“This one right here was always my hero,” Key said. “The B-29. I saw a lot of them over there. And they really did a good job. I was always fascinated by the B-29 because it was the flying fortress.”

From the sky to the ground, Key says danger was everywhere.

“No doubt they saw a lot of danger because I saw a lot of those planes burst into flames and hit the ground,” Key said.

Another veteran, Frank Chornak, says he remembers these planes as major allies as he also fought on the beaches of Normandy.

“They were the ones that broke up the firing on us there on Omaha Beach,” Chornak said.

These brave men say they gladly served their country.

“It’s a duty and you have to look at it that way,” Chornak said. “You have to give back what you’re country gave to you and they’ve done a lot for me and my family.”

“I wouldn’t take a million dollars for the experience but I wouldn’t give a dime to go back through it,” Key said.
