Mt. Vernon police, Union Pacific R.R. promote rail road crossing safety

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) -

The Mt. Vernon Police Department along with the Union Pacific Railroad teamed up to promote and enforce rail road crossing safety on Thursday.

Police say there were 18 vehicles stopped during the detail. Thirteen various citations were issued and along with five warnings.

The focus was to educate the public on the laws governing rail road crossings.

According to Mt. Vernon Police, Illinois law requires all motor vehicles to come to a complete stop at railroad crossings when flashing lights or stop gates are activated. If there is no train coming toward the crossing, the vehicle may proceed across the tracks if it is safe to do so. This is only at crossings with no gates. Vehicles can never go around activated crossing gates.

Police say because weight of the train prevents it from stopping quickly, when a train collides with a vehicle, the results are often catastrophic.
