DEXTER, MO (KFVS) -

Police are looking for a suspect who ran from officers after a routine overnight traffic stop in Dexter.

On Sunday around 1:25 a.m., Dexter Police received a call about a silver PT Cruiser traveling west toward Dexter on US Highway 60 from Sikeston. The reporting person said the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and driving erratically.

About 1:30 am, a Dexter officer spotted the vehicle, still westbound on US Highway 60. The vehicle was seen exceeding the posted speed limit and at that point, and a traffic stop was made.

The vehicle pulled onto the shoulder of westbound Highway 60 around one- half mile east of State Highway AD. As an officer approached the vehicle, the driver fled on foot northbound, crossing a ditch over onto the North Outer Road. No one else was inside the vehicle.

When the officer lost sight of the driver, a parameter was set up and Dexter's K9 Unit responded to the area.

The K9 Unit continued tracking north, near D & L Trucking. Nearby, officers heard what they believed to be the suspect running through a wooded area and continued to follow them toward a private lake.

As the officers reached the top of the lake levy, they heard a loud splash and believed that the suspect jumped into the water.

The K9 continued to track to the edge of the water fresh footprints was discovered.

Officers searched the edge of the lake bank, but due to the terrain surrounding the water, were unable to find anyone.

Officers feared that a possibly intoxicated person fell into the lake. At that time, the boating operations unit from Sikeston DPS was contacted and they responded to the scene.

When Sikeston DPS arrived, they deployed their watercraft and a more extensive search was conducted, but no one was found.

The Dexter Police Department continues to follow leads in the active investigation.
