Does it Work: EggGenie

JACKSON, MO (KFVS) -

The EggGenie is an electric egg cooker that claims to make the perfect eggs every time. Hard boiled, poached, soft boiled, or medium boiled are the options and you can even steam vegetables with it.

“My girls eat eggs just about every morning,” said Becky Jacobs.

Becky Jacobs and her daughters are the perfect testers for this EggGenie. The product promises to make perfect eggs every time.

“There's a hard and medium and a soft boil,” said Becky.

After the girls decide to make hard boiled eggs, it took a moment to figure out exactly how much water to use.

“It's a little bit hard to understand because the numbers are backwards,” said Becky.

After a closer inspection, Becky realizes the more eggs boiled the less water needed. So, she poured in the right amount of water to hard boil the maximum amount of eggs, seven. The egg tray is placed on top and she’s rolling right along.

“Make a small hole on the pointy end of the egg,” explained Becky.

Yes, you heard right, this sharp pointy steel pin is used to make a small whole in the egg.

After a few attempts, Taylor let's Mom try. Probably best, since the pin is very sharp this part is best left to the adult.

“I guess we need to put the lid on even though it doesn't say,” said Becky.

Plug it in and it's ready to go, but the directions also don't say how long it takes, so they’re just patiently waiting for a buzz. About 13 minutes later, there it is. Becky runs cold water over the eggs and peels off the shells.

“Looks like it cooked them hard boiled,” said Becky.

Now time for the true test, how do they taste? The silence may be a good sign.

“It tasted a lot better than a normal egg,” said Taylor. “I thought it had more moisture in the yolk than normal in a pan boiled egg. I think it's more because of the holes we poke in the top

Becky says that little pin is reason enough for her to crack and just use a pan.

“I would probably just boil them myself all because of the little pin that you have to stick the top of the egg,” said Becky. “It was a little nerve-wracking wondering if the egg was going to burst.”

The EggGenie boils up an eggcellent B+ on this Does it Work test. The product was bought as Wal-Mart for about $15.
