Board elects new fire chief for Clearwater Fire Dist.

The Board for the Clearwater Fire Protection District elected a new fire chief Monday night.

They elected Leo Giovando during a closed meeting. The meeting lasted about two hours.

Giovando has been years of experience. He's been with the department since about 1977.

He said he feels the city is the laughing-stock of southeast Missouri right now and plans on fixing that. He also said as the new chief, he plans on bringing in more training for firefighters.

Last week, the rural fire chief, Josh Allen, and other members of the department resigned after allegations they took a fire department vehicle on a personal trip.

The board said they are also looking into what they can legally do as far as changing out members. Two of the firefighters that resigned last week are still on the board now.

The Clearwater Fire Protection District is separate from the Piedmont Fire Department.

The interim Piedmont Fire Chief Shane Babb said he will only be in that position for two months. The search for that position remains ongoing.
