US 60 Bridge reopens after confusion over barge strike

Posted: Updated:

LEDBETTER, KY (KFVS) - A bridge over the Tennessee River near Ledbetter has re-opened after some confusion over a barge strike.

The bridge was vehicle closed to traffic overnight by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet after initial reports that a barge struck the bridge.

A new US 60 Tennessee River Bridge is under construction about 1500 feet upstream from the existing bridge. It turns out an empty hopper barge broke loose from a mooring upstream and came to rest on the main pier of the new bridge, not the old one.

The old US 60 bridge reopened to traffic as it was not impacted by the barge bump as initially believed.

A KYTC bridge inspector is checking new bridge for possible damage as a precautionary measure and engineers supervising construction of the new bridge will also be checking on the structure.

The New US 60 Tennessee River is expected to open to traffic this summer.
