CHARLESTON, MO (KFVS) -

Charleston DPS says the man accused of shooting a father and son on July 4 over fireworks has been taken into custody in North Carolina.

Mark S. Mowery was taken into custody by the Veteran's Affairs Police Department. According to DPS, in the near future he will be turned over to local law enforcement and extradition arrangements will begin.

Mowery is being held on a no bond warrant charging him with assault 1st, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.

DPS says the two victims in this crime are improving.

Mowery is accused of shooting a man and his son after an argument over fireworks.

The shooting happened around 5 p.m. Thursday, July 4 near the intersection of Ironbanks and Swank streets in Charleston.

Police say initial reports indicate there was an argument over the use of fireworks and one of the men pulled a gun and started shooting.

A 39-year-old Charleston man and his 10-year-old son were hurt.

Both victims were taken to an area hospital. Both were in stable condition.

Neighbors say they heard shots but thought they were fireworks.

"I was in the kitchen cooking dinner and I heard multiple shots," Sarah Johnson said. "I thought they were fireworks. I thought, 'Man! Those are some loud fireworks.' So, about 20 minutes later I stepped outside and the streets were full with ambulances and police. I was just shocked."

The Charleston DPS would like to thank the many agencies that helped in this investigation: The Mississippi County Sheriff's Dept., Sikeston Department of Public Safety, Ballard County KY Sheriff's Dept., Paducah KY Police Department, North Carolina State Police, Onslow County NC Sheriff's Dept., Jacksonville NC Police Dept. and the Fayetteville NC Police Department.
