A dangerous situation unfolded in the town of Energy, Illinois Tuesday night.

Police say an officer came face to face with a man who pointed a gun at him.

Investigators says it's was a situation that escalated very quickly.

Energy's Police Chief Shawn Ladd says one of his officers approached 36-year-old James Bell just after midnight.

Ladd says when the officer asked Bell to take his hands out of his pockets. What went from a basic request to a command, turned into a to a shouted command.

Police say Bell pulled out a gun and pointed it directly at the officer.

Chief Ladd says after a final warning, Bell complied and put down the gun.

The situation is one Ladd says his officers and people in community can learn from.

"The citizens of Herrin and the surrounding area forming these neighborhood crime watches, which we in police departments completely support and encourage. but the purpose of those organizations is to observe and report behavior. And actually confronting someone can be a very dangerous situation," said Ladd.
