VAN BUREN, MO (KFVS) -

Authorities are reminding the public about safety after an Illinois swimmer drowned in the Current River on Saturday.

The Carter County Sheriff's Office says while enjoying the rivers and waterways to remember that practicing safety is vital.

Officers say to keep working personal safety and flotation devices at all times. And, to remember that operating watercrafts under the influence of alcohol or drugs is not only illegal but extremely dangerous.

One man at the river on Sunday says that he survived a scare there just last year. Others feel people should know their surroundings at all times and play it safe.

"I was kayaking with my daughter and we kinda turned sideways and kinda got caught up in the current as it kinda flipped under a log," said Bruce Aitken of Sparta, Ill. "I lost my glasses and my other Aitken farm hat and I come up the other side and loaded up again and took off."

Coroner Eric McSpadden says there have been three drownings in the past three years in the area of Van Buren.
