CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

As temperatures in the Heartland climbed into the 90s on Thursday, most folks cranked up the air conditioning.

But many people in the Heartland don't have that option.

That's why Ameren Missouri donated 50 air conditioners to the East Missouri Action Agency on Thursday.

The agency will give the AC units to low income adults and elderly customers.

And while the donation only makes a dent in the need in the area, every unit could help save a life.

"Oh, it can be deadly," said Stephanie Westrup with the East Missouri Action Agency. "When the heat gets up high, you can only do so much with fans and keeping your windows open."

Half of the donated units will stay in Cape Girardeau. The other half will go to the East Missouri Action Agency's office in Park Hills.
