Nuclear Regulatory Commission to host meeting about Honeywell inspections

METROPOLIS, IL (KFVS) -

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will host an upcoming public meeting in Metropolis to talk about inspections and modifications done at the Honeywell uranium conversion plant.

The plant was shut down in May 2012 and has made some modifications to resume limited uranium conversion operations. If NRC officials find facility enhancements to reduce the likelihood of uranium hexafluoride being released as a result of earthquakes or tornadoes acceptable, the plant is expected to resume full operations.

The meeting will take place on July 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Center located at West 10th Street in Metropolis. Following a short presentation, NRC staff will be available to answer questions.

The NRC has set up a toll-free bridge line for people who can't attend the meeting. For more information, contact Nick Peterka at 404-997-4556 or Richard Gibson at 404-997-4718.
