Miss Illinois contestants help Habitat for Humanity

HERRIN, IL (KFVS) -

Thirty-two Miss Illinois contestants and Habitat for Humanity volunteers worked shoulder-to-shoulder Monday in Marion.

The women put the competition aside and focused on giving back to the community.

The home in Herrin that is being built for a family of five that would otherwise not be able to afford such a home themselves.

"We came today to kind of check out one of the homes for a family here that is less fortunate than to build a home like this at this caliber for themselves," said Miss Illinois Megan Ervin. "Myself and some of the contestants got to actually hammer in a few of the nails into the drywall and here a little more about what the Habitat for Humanity does here in Marion."

The four bedroom, two bath home is expected to be finished this summer.

Teaming up with Habitat for Humanity is just one of several community services the ladies will participate in leading up to the Miss Illinois pageant in the coming weeks.
