CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

Carbondale is now home to a Hindu temple.

Located on the 1200 block of East Walnut Street, the building will serve nearly 300 Hindu families in the area who until now had to commute to St. Louis or Nashville for worship.

Although not quite complete, the temple was given an inauguration ceremony over the weekend.

The construction project is almost three years in the making and temple goers are excited about having it located so close to home.

Very few people actual make it to St. Louis every month or every other month. So it gives access to those things that are missing at this point whether it is a religious ceremony, birthday or a day where you want to just pray to god and many other things," said Board of Trustees Pradeep Reddy.

The front doors are from India.

The temple should be completed in the next few months.
