JACKSON, MO (KFVS) -

A Cape Girardeau man accused of killing his wife and son appeared in court Monday.

George Joseph, 48, of Cape Girardeau appeared via video monitor in front of Judge Gary Kamp Monday at 11:19 a.m. at the Cape Girardeau County Courthouse in Jackson.

Police say Joseph shot and killed his wife and son on May 30 as they slept in their beds. Investigators say he then shot himself, but survived. While in the hospital, Joseph told police he shot his wife and son on order to save them the shame of financial ruin.

Joseph wore all orange and looked straight into the camera the entire time with his hands by his side. He was in a secure room with guards in the Cape Girardeau County Jail.

Representing Joseph is attorney Bryan Greaser of Cape Girardeau. Greaser was in the courtroom talking with Judge Kamp. Kamp then told Joseph that he will be due back in court on July 19 at 8:30 a.m. for a preliminary examination. Joseph said, "Ok."

Greaser says this next court date is the first opportunity to see and hear the evidence in this case. Greaser represents Joseph who is charged with two counts murder and armed criminal action.

"I do not know of any other charges at this time," Greaser said. "You can never rule out any other charges that could affect this case."

Greaser says he believes the investigation in this case is still ongoing.
