CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

U.S. Congressman Jason Smith was in Cape Girardeau County Friday to learn about the East Missouri Action Agency and talk with the children.

It has been 16 days since Smith took over Jo Ann Emerson's seat in the U.S. House of Representatives and he says he has been hard at work.

“We’ve not held back," Smith said. "We’ve hit the ground running. We filed our first bill last week. It’s the balanced budget amendment. It’s something we actually believe that the government should live within their means when they’re spending our money. This week we have the farm bill on the floor. It was unfortunate, frustrating in fact, to see three years of work and over 40 committee hearings and to see that it failed because one party believe that it cut too much and another party believed that it didn’t cut enough.”

Smith says one thing on the top of his to-do list is regulation reform.

"We are drafting legislation right now to reform all the rules and regulations," Smith said. "I did that in the state of Missouri and it’s something we need to do at the federal level. When you look at the burdensome rules that are affecting family farms or small businesses and just everyday individuals, it’s destroying our jobs, it’s destroying our way of life and that’s one thing that I want to do. I think that when you’re looking at over 170,000 pages of rules on the books, we’ve got to do something to take them off and just let government get off our backs and out of our way and just be able to operate.”

Smith visited other places in Cape Girardeau County including two factories in Jackson.
