CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

The number of children needing free lunches is on the rise this summer, according to leaders at the East Missouri Action Agency.

“There’s always been a need for quality food provisions, particularly during the summer months when children aren’t in school and can’t take advantage of the school lunch program,” Director Bill Bunch said.

The program provides up to 850 meals per week. Leaders say more children are coming for the meals because less families are qualifying for assistance programs due to budget cuts.

“This is aimed at kids who are low-income and that can’t sometimes get good quality meals at home,” Bunch said.

The employees who prepare the food say it is a lot of work, but it is well worth it.

“Once they get their plate they seem happy and content, so that’s the good thing about serving the free lunches because you know they’re getting one good meal a day,” Felicia Kellum said.

Bunch says it helps more than just the children.

“It’s definitely good for the families because this is a meal that they don’t have to provide and it helps with their income,” Bunch said.

The program also serves lunches Monday through Friday at the Boys and Girls Club and Red Star Baptist Church.
