POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -

"This is my hometown," John Stanard, a former newspaper editor in Poplar Bluff, said. "I was born here at the Poplar Bluff hospital and have lived in this town my entire life. I’ll be 73 next month."

To say John Stanard is a Poplar Bluff expert may be an understatement.

"My mother’s family owned and operated the Daily Republic from 1916 when my grandfather started it until 1988," Stanard said.

In that time, Stanard says things have certainly changed. Present day, Stanard says Bluff has come a long way. He points to current companies as an example of the city’s growth.

"We moved to Poplar Bluff in the mid-90s and since that our employment overall has increased over 700 percent," Jeff Libla, the general manager with Mid Continent Nail Corporation, said.

Libla says that translates to more than 500 employees.

"We are as of 2012, the largest in the world," Libla said.

Liba credits Poplar Bluff with helping make that happen. More importantly, the city and the people here have allowed them to get even bigger.

"And I think in the last two years, we’ve increased 190 employees," Libla said.

"So I think the future is very bright for Poplar Bluff," Stanard said. "To call it a boom town right now, I’m not sure that’s an apt description but certainly progressive is a good word to use."

No boom for this retired newspaper guy, but still a place he’s not leaving anytime soon.
