HERRIN, IL (KFVS) -

The search for a WWI soldier at the Herrin cemetery has actually turned up a lot more than what the people involved could have ever expected.

The Herrin cemetery was originally laid out on a 25 acre piece of ground.

Part of it was set aside as a Potter's Field for the poor, unknown or unclaimed bodies that have died in Herrin since 1905.

The story gets interesting with WWI soldier Antonio Molkovich's grave.

He was one of the 16 miners who were killed in the Herrin massacre and buried in 1922 in the Herrin city cemetery Potter's Field.

But in June 2009 when Scott Doody tried to find the soldier's grave in the cemetery to photograph it, it was no where to be found.

"Drove to the Herrin cemetery to do that and no marker," Doody said. "Asked a few questions. I knew that Antonio Molkovich had been killed back in '22 as part of the famous Herrin massacre. So I knew he shared 16 other graves spaces. No one seemed to know where they were."

Now, Scott Doody and two professors who have done extensive research on the Herrin cemetery Potter's Field believe there are more than 130 missing graves in section 15 of the cemetery.

They suspect the cemetery's sexton has been selling grave sites to unsuspecting families and burying people on top of one another.

Some of those families are going to be at a meeting in Herrin Monday night.

So are the professors who helped Doody write his book about the Herrin cemetery controversy.
